The History of the Kimberley Community Choir

The choir was incorporated on 28th May, 2001, and its first rehearsal was 10th September, 2001.

All members are asked to be tested at a simple audition, and 98% so far have passed.

The choir's first performance was at St Andrew's Scottish Evening Concert on 30th November, 2001.

During early December, the choir performed Christmas carols in Kimberley and Cranbrook, culminating in 2 Christmas Concerts on 19th and 20th December, 2001. Santa Claus was there, as were several very talented artists to complete the program along with the choir. Both nights were all but sold out, enabling the choir to donate to the local Food Bank.

In early January, 2002, the choir took a cut down version of the Christmas concert to the Kimberley Special Care Home.

On 9th March, 2002, the choir performed at the Annual Cultural Exhibition at Centre 64, Artsaround and on 24th April, 2002, KCC performed wonderfully well at the East Kootenay Performing Arts Festival winning the Choir Trophy. In addition, the KCC accompanied Leslie Lindberg, local dancer and teacher for the Kimberley Dance Academy, at the KDA Annual Show called "Welcome to the Jungle" in front of 1200 patrons over 2 nights, 10th and 11th May, 2002.

The choir's inaugural Spring Concerts were successfully presented on Friday 31st May and Saturday 1st June 2002 in the Dance Studio of Centre 64 to large audiences. Stage 2 of the choir risers were completed on 30th May, 2002. Some members of the KCC performed for the Kimberley International Folk Festival, in the Platzl and the Curling Rink on August 31st, 2002.

The 2002-2003 Season commenced on September 9th, with the first Annual General Meeting being held on Monday, 23rd September, 2002. The choir's first performance for the 2002-3 Season was at the Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in Kimberley, with the Kimberley Community Band.

The choir performed carols in the Kimberley Platzl on Friday, 22nd November, 2002 prior to the arrival of Santa Claus.

KCC performed carols at the Cranbrook Mall from 12 noon to 12:45 pm on Saturday 7th December, 2002, and after a quick lunch, repeated the program of carols at the Tamarack Centre to an appreciable crowd.

On 17th and 18th December, 2002, the Choir had resounding success with the presentation of it's two Christmas Concerts 2002 in Centre 64. Both nights were sell outs. In fact, 15 - 20 had to be turned away. The artists included Wild Horse String Quartet and Singers, Gwen Bailey, Arline Collins, Marina Hansma, "As the Crow Flies", the Kootenay Harmony Chorus and Santa and Mrs Claus. The choir sang 4 brackets of carols and Christmas songs, much to the delight of the audiences. Part Proceeds of $250 was donated to the Food Bank.

The KCC performed a mini version of the Christmas concert at the Pines Special Care Home on Wednesday, 8th January, 2003. The choir broke into 3 parts and sang down the wings of the Home, as well as performing in the main dining room. Arline Collins also presented a couple of Christmas Songs, much to the delight of all.

The choir presented Valentine's Day Dinner & Entertainment evening at the Centennial Hall on Friday 14th February, 2003, at 6:30 pm with pre-dinner drinks, followed by a 5 course dinner (appetizer, salad, soup, Prime Rib Main course, and dessert. The night was a sell out, and the Hall was beautifully decorated out in the Valentine's theme. Entertainment was provided by Arline Collins, and Greg and Tracy Garvin. The evening proved a great financial success for the choir, adding some $1200 to the bank account. These funds will greatly assist in purchasing new music. The whole event was arranged and the "dream" of Cheryl Stoutley, who, with her excellent sub-committee, of Jane Erven, Tracy Garvin, Bert Lambregts and Joyce Maxwell, stated after this success, she will definitely start thinking about a similar event for St Patrick's Day in 2004. Congratulations to all, and a big thank you to the members of the KCC for decorating, cooking, serving and cleaning up afterwards.

The KCC performed most creditably at the East Kootenay Performing Arts Festival on 9th April, 2003, singing "How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place", and "Java Jive", to the complete satisfaction of the adjudicator from Saskatoon, Glen Goodman. The choir was awarded the best choir trophy which was presented to them on their performance of "Java Jive" and "The Rose" at the Gala Concert on Sunday 27th April, 2003.

The KCC presented its second set of Spring Concerts at Centre 64 Dance Studio on Friday and Saturday nights from 7 pm to 9 pm. Guest Artists included the "Grease Troupe", "Klassen Troupe", Andy Johnston, Harmony Four and Ian Ferrie. Part proceeds went to the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank.

On 11th May 2003, the President received a letter of resignation from their conductor, Arline Collins, stating time constraints made it impossible for her to continue.

On 12th May 2003, there was a General Meeting to discuss the new situation. There is a call out for a new conductor. Ian Ferrie will take over in the meantime.

Following this General Meeting, the choir had a RECESS party and handed in their music.

The choir resumed the 2003-2004 season on Monday 8th September, 2003 with part time conductors, Goldie Pederson and Ian Ferrie taking the choir, while John and Cheryl Stoutley were on vacation in Nova Scotia. The Annual General Meeting was held on 29th September, 2003, with many of the outgoing committee, being happy to stand for another year. Margaret Mayes was appointed pianist, and John Stoutley elected conductor.

On 11th November, 2003, the choir performed with the Kimberley Community Band, for the Remembrance Day Service.

21st November 2003 the choir, dressed in their Santa Hats, performed carols in freezing weather in the Kimberley Platl.

28th November 2003 members of the choir performed 3 Scottish songs at St Andrew's Concert in the Presbyterian Church.

On Saturday 6th December, the choir, again dressed in their Santa Hats and uniform, sang a selection of carols, very creditably in the Tamarack Mall

The choir then performed 2 Christmas Concerts on the 16th and 17th December, 2003 to a packed audience in Centre 64.

The choir performed at the Pines Special Care Home in early January 2004.

Members of the choir performed at a Coffee House Concert in Centre 64 on 27th March 2004.

The choir performed at the EKPAF on 16th April, 2004 along with 9 other choirs at the Royal Alexander Hall in Cranbrook.

The Annual Spring Concerts were presented by the choir with guest artists at Centre 64 Dance Studio on Saturday 15th May, 2004 and Sunday afternoon on Sunday 16th May, to packed audiences. Again another $200 was able to be donated to the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank.

Members of the choir enjoyed a BREAK UP party at Maureen and Glynis Fediuk's residence on 17th May 2004. A great time was had by all.

About 22 members and family played games, and had a POT LUCK supper at Bert Lambregts and Margaret Deck's place at Ta Ta Creek on Sunday 29th August, 2004.

The choir had its 3rd Annual General Meeting in September, and since then has performed for the Remembrance Day Service on 11th November, carols in the Platz on 19th November, the Scottish Evening Concert on 26th November, carols in Tamarack Mall on 4th December.

KCC performed at the Remembrance Day Service on November 11th 2004.

KCC performed carols in the Platzl on November 19th 2004.

KCC performed 3 Scottish songs at St Andrew's Scottish Concert on November 26th 2004.

KCC performed carols in the Tamarack Mall on Saturday December 4th 2004.

2 Christmas Concerts were presented by the choir on Wednesday and Thursday 15th and 16th December in Centre 64 Dance Studio to full houses.

The Pines Concert planned for January 5th 2005 was cancelled due to a flu epidemic, and the Valentine's Dinner and Entertainment Evening planned for February 18th was also cancelled, but due to lack of support by the public.

The KCC performed creditably at the EKPAF on 8th April, 2005. Ken Mallet from the Valley Voices in Invermere was the adjudicator.

The KCC had a successful presentation of their 4th Annual Spring Concert in Centre 64 to a packed audience on Thursday 12th May 2005. Most of the artists were drawn from the choir, including Lynda Chamberlin, Tim Plait, Glynnis Fediuk, Kirsten Guest, with Jeannie MacDonald on flute. John Stoutley announced his resignation as pianist following the concert, as he and his wife, Cheryl, are moving to Lacombe, Alberta, to be closer to family. Tim Plait will take his place. Jane Erven is stepping down also from conductor, and will be replaced by Marta Wahlstrom.

Dave Dunbar is President. Olyve Schuler is Secretary and Erika Lehr is Treasurer.

Others on the committee are: Mona Sykes (Librarian and Registrar), Joyce Maxwell, Jane Erven (conductor), Margaret Deck and Bert Lambregts.

The Kimberley Community Choir is affiliated with the Alberta Choral Federation.
